I’m getting more and more convinced that the decrease of visitors numbers and the lower Google ranking probably has someting to do with what I described here: http://www.symbiostock.org/topic/81/tricky-problem-seo-meta-description/ .

The fact that the Excerpt was taken from us, and therefore Yoast couldn’t generate meta descriptons anymore (an basically all image pages don’t have a meta description anymore), must have set me back drastically.

I’m not sure that is the issue. I saw a drastic decrease in traffic from 09/20 to 09/24 and I don’t use meta descriptions from Yoast.

But you do use meta descriptions, don’t you? If you don’t use the Yoast meta generating features than the issue doesn’t affect you at all.

Yes, I did use a meta description, but I made a mistake. I hard-coded the meta description on all of my images (so it was the same text on all of my images). I do use Yoast, but didn’t know that Yoast could add a meta description automatically (based on other data) until today. So I have just added the Yoast automated one today.

I think that the issue with decreased visitors might have to do with this post:

I think that you need to remove the ampersand (&).

If I go live with a basic watermark and later decide I want to do something else…I can reprocess the images to apply the new watermark to existing images, correct?

    That is correct.

I have opted for a single-use license. I never liked the royalty free license, where someone gets to buy your image for a few $ and then use it on as many multi-million dollar projects as they like. I think that it is only fair that someone pays per use.

I also offer extended / enhanced licenses, but at this point the customer needs to contact me for that.

    I’m on GoDaddy.

If I remember correctly, you have to create a password for FTP (it is separate from your regular GoDaddy account).

I put the following in FileZilla (in the QuickConnect bar at the top of the screen):

    Host: shazamimages.com
    Username:
    Password:

I then click the QuickConnect button.

    100% responsive layout

Can someone please explain what that means?

It means that the layout will respond to different screen sizes and it will always be well readable/usable. You can test this feature simply by changing your browser window width and watch how the layout will respond to the changes.

    Thanks.

I’m on GoDaddy and (in general) don’t have the issues discussed in this thread. Pages load within a second or so and I don’t believe that GoDaddy throttles web sites.

I think it makes most sense to order your domain at the same place and time where/when you order your web space.

I have heard that it is better to have your domain at a different company than your web host, because if they are the same company and they find something that they don’t like (your using too much space, bandwidth, processing power, etc), then they can shutdown your domain.

But if you have your domain and web host at separate companies, then if your web host shuts you down, you can always just transfer your stuff to another web host and continue on.

I notice that the meta description I type in Yoast doesnt even show in the db, though. I am not certain where that stuff is stored. I wish I knew more, sorry I can’t help.

I believe that Yoast data is stored in the WP_POSTMETA table with META_KEY LIKE ‘%_yoast%’

Thanks to everyone for the wonderful words of encouragement.

The funny thing about this sale is that I originally wasn’t going to create a pink sky version. I figured that nobody would ever buy a version with a pink sky. But over the years, one of the thing that I have learned is that you never know what a customer needs. As long as the image has the quality, it has the potential to sell. Some of my top-selling images are images that I never imagined would have sold.

In addition, I have created the similar images with a variety of colors and orientations to provide customers with lots of choices. I would never have been able to do this on any of the third-party stock sites. They would have rejected most of them for some silly reason and the customer would never have found this image.

I pray that you all have a blessed weekend.

Is there an approval process on Symbiostock? I thought you could upload whatever you like on your own site? Maybe I’m misunderstanding.

No there is no “approval process” per se. And that is why you can get more images on your own site. You can upload whatever you like, but it makes business sense to only upload what you believe customers will purchase. The third-party sites are known for coming up with wacky reasons for rejecting an image.

What benefits does Symbiostock offer potential contributors that other stock sites do not?

    – The ability to control every aspect of sales. They can pick what type of license they want to sell under. The pricing of images. The sizes available. The types of images available (jpg, png, etc). Whether they want to have a sale on certain or all images. Etc.

    – The ability to create a brand for their images.

    – Higher royalty rates (Symbiostock artists receive almost 100% of the sale, whereas most third party stock sites give between 10% and 50%, and sometimes artists will only receive 0.10 to 0.35 on a image sold via subscription).

    – Higher approval rates on the images that they submit. Many third-party sites reject great images for ridiculous reasons. I have had images that are top sellers on many sites be rejected on other sites.

    – No need to purchase a package of tokens or a subscription, when you only need one or two images.

    – Exclusive images that can’t be found anywhere else (about a quarter of my entire portfolio is exclusive and that percentage will only go up over time).

    – Ability to contact the artist directly, and have images customized directly by the artist (different size. different file format, increased/decreased saturation, etc).

    – Increased number of variations on a theme. Many third-party stock sites will reject image variations.

    – The ability to support the artist community.
