I’m looking at amazon S3 pricing – have you guys considered how expensive bandwidth costs are?
Sure, storage for 300gb would be something like $9, but to serve that actual data, you’re looking at $27. That’s a total of $36 for 300gb. You can probably get a VPS for close to that amount of money, which is almost a full server.
And that’s assuming you don’t have a lot of bandwidth usage. If Google crawls you, or Symzio crawls you, or any other search engine does, or someone spiders your site, you’re paying out of pocket for all of that.
In my experience, working with Amazon in other capacities, they are a sneaky company. They like to get you to move your stuff to them for cheap, then charge you an arm and a leg to get your stuff back.
Look at their infrequent costs – say you were to backup a 2tb hard drive there, just in case something crashes:
Initial cost: $25/month – pretty cheap.
Say your hard drive crashes and you need to download all that data. Here is the bandwidth cost:
$180
Not to mention the request costs and who knows what else. IMO, maybe, maybe it can be used as a backup solution. But for real-time media hosting? I wouldn’t dare. I’d be scared every time someone downloads an image from me.
Am I missing something?

April 29, 2016 at 7:54 pm #26504I just uploaded a file with a meta title, description and keywords and it auto-published upon processing. So it must be that your media files do not have meta titles embedded before uploading. I also see that the file names are showing up as the titles for your products which further indicates that this is the case.

So those commands will not work with Symbiostock. They need to enable PHP Imagick, which generally is now available with most hosts.

We’re all artists, to some extent, and giving everyone the ability to personalize their own independent site is a really good mechanism. Andre does not use Symbiostock Express, for example, and it is a fantastic looking site that gives a slightly different feel.
However, the fact of the matter is that despite sales being very hard to come by, $50 here and there is really inconsequential in the grand scheme of things. I’ve invested far, far, far more than that and received nothing even remotely in return for the amount of work I’ve put into this project, and it is all in the same spirit of getting to a point where we are getting sales regularly, where we aren’t depending on third parties for our livelihood.
So, according to me, if you’re hesitant to spend the money, don’t – just use a free theme or find one that appeals to you and personalize it. You can learn how to tweak themes or even make your own if you want to save money.
On the other hand, aside from hosting costs, one time investments to get your site looking as good as it can is worth it, in my opinion, if you are a professional who is serious about being a photographer for the rest of your life.
