Do you not join a network of websites and a group of artists when you use Symbiostock? I thought that was the beauty of the whole thing. Otherwise people can use anything to build their own independent, unconnected site, as I have.

How can I claim a retroactive copyright? By publishing here (or anywhere) I automatically own the copyright to my work; I am allowing usage, as all of us do when we allow sites to sell rights to use our copyrighted work.

“The author of a work is the initial owner of the copyright in it, and may exploit the work himself or transfer some or all the rights conferred by the copyright to others. The author generally is the person who conceives of the copyrightable expression and fixes it or causes it to be fixed in a tangible form.”

true, but you gave up some of those rights when you initially allowed anyone to use the work — otherwise no one could ever use such work for fear of being blackballed at some later date. this isn’t nitpicking — symbiostock is open source, which means no one can be barred from using it as they please. many of us have already created faq and other text that we have distributed under the same conditions (ie anyone can use/modify them).. those who have created work they’d like to control have stated conditions when they published. trying to bar specific individuals from rights granted to all others is just petty

your symbiocard.xml shows you currently have 56 categories – is that correct? a few of us have over 100 categories and I’ve not seen any problems like you reported, so it may be something to do with your host rather than the sym theme itself.

[those not interested in techy details can skip next paragraph] categories have been giving me trouble with my global database collection, since they’re not stored consistently – at least the xml file isolates them, but sometimes they contain ‘<' and other times '<' so parsing is a hassle. however, they are stored as 'long text' which means there should be no limit to total length.

For example if I type ‘Motorbike’ in the search box on my main unfinished site it shows me the following page,

    Results for “Motorbike”
No results found on this site.

No Results found. Try browsing the categories. Maybe you will find some hidden gems!
    Image Categories
    .Yellow (1)
    Abstract | Textures (1)
    All Images (1)

I’ve actually installed a blank copy of symbio to a different sub domain which Im testing lots of bits on so the main one is slightly different. but on that link above I want to alter the text it displays in the result.

    THanks

right, just fyi, that’s the way it’s ‘supposed ‘to work — right now, you only have 1 image published and it doesn’t show empty categories you may have set up. more categories will show up when you add more images. so you may not need to change the wording….

I have done some editing…. does this work for people?

    ….

Symbiostock is the easy-to-use, fair trade network of photographers, videographers and illustrators that offers you the chance to sell directly to buyers and receive 100% of the sale. It also offers you tremendous marketing power by allowing you to link your site to other artists’, building on each other’s marketing efforts and increasing exposure to your work. Buyers can search multiple portfolios with just one click…….

i’d remove the ‘fair trade’ wording — there was discussion of this in msg and ‘fair trade’ has a very specific meaning that symbiostock doesn’t achieve; many of us do believe in the ideas behind fair trade, but ity’s misleading to apply it directly

No, you can’t. I own the copyright to my work. You absolutely do not have my permission to use one word of it.

So are you saying now that this was all for nothing as none of us can use this?

The special reports at http://symbiostock-search.com are designed primarily to help Symbiostock members. If active Symbiostock members donate there, we can keep the site free, and continue to list all sites. The alternative would be to require an annual fee to appear on this site.

500:1, 1000:1, r whatever, won;’t apply to any individual site — only to thousands f sites, averaged

our numbers are too small to make any sort of projection — half out sites have 500 images or less and the conent varies wildly, so there’s no easy ay to draw general conclusions

in msg, look at the variations reported for RPI or any other sales stat

10 ubique images that everyone wants will draw sales. 5000 images that are duplicated everywhere will have few or no sales; assuming of course the site is found. it’s not easy money

just a general fyi – Kickstarter doesn’t allow open source projects like this – nor does it allow individual sites to solicit funds

in the pro version, set total images to 300 ot whatever & all will be updated

in std version, setup yjr psge to display 200 images, etc, then bulk edit will work

I’ve talked about this in MSG before — in the old physical stock days, an agency had to mail slides to customers and images sold for $50-100 or much more. unfortunately many photographers took this to mean the images themselves were worth that. as digital stock emerged, there was resistance and those who sold digitally were blamed for the drop in prices.

instead, the entire market has changed – thousands of people who couldn’t afford old style stock are now looking for images. the average stock image just isn’t worth $100, no matter what the overhead costs are. symbio helps independents by providing an alternative that reduces the overhead of running your own site

we are producing a commodity, not fine art, and pricing will reflect that.

there’s a pricing summary at http://symbiostock-search.com the averages are inflated though, since there are a few sites that use $100 or more as their price for large images

right, when google finds what you see as an ‘oops’, it lists it as a crawl error (fr your eyes only) and automatically removes it from indexing; meanwhile it will continue to index your new pages & images

Is it OK to point to another site in the network without consulting the other site owner?

definitely, they’ll get an email automatically saying you connected to them

also, we need to encourage everyone to fill in the focus & specialty areas – a large number of these are still blank
