    Hi,

    I’m currently really studying the possibility to participate in this project, and I’d like to know if it’s possible to create several levels of galleries inside each other. A little bit like the Windows Explorer tree of folders.

    To me this is important because, besides the thousands of RF images, I have almost 10.000 RM images and I need to have them organized by theme and then by location. I really wouldn’t like to have a simple category and all photos dumped into there.

    Is it possible to do this, for example:

    Castles
    -> Almourol Castle
    -> São Jorge Castle
    -> Palmela Castle

    Palaces
    -> Ajuda Palace
    -> Mafra Palace

    The RM licensing is yet to be launched, but this feature would be extremely important for the organization of my site.

    From the sites I’ve looked all of them seem to only have “Categories” which would be impractical since in my case there would a huge amount of them.

    Thanks.

    Yes you can do that is the short answer. Now just wait for someone to tell you how 🙂

    Yes, Symbiostock offers parent and child categories. I don’t know many levels deep but they are there to be used.

    As somebody who tried to do what you’re talking about, I’ll just add a warning. In early September, I had 5 categories, dozens of sub categories, and even more dozens of sub-sub categories until suddenly my system didn’t work any more and my entire setup crashed.

    I just dug back into the forum to find my thread about this problem. It’s been solved now, with help from others in the group, but only because I accepted the fact that I couldn’t have as many categories and sub categories as I wanted.

    Good luck!

    Thanks for all your answers!

    I’ll take a look on that discussion. In my case I don’t think I’ll have sub-sub-categories in the vast majority of cases.

    But some categories will have tenths of sub-categories.

    This looks like a great tool for creation of hierarchical structures.
    Are there any known disadvantages for having nested categories? (search, batch editor, …)

    I have categories 3 deep – used to have them 4 deep without a problem, but changed them when the first category change was made

    http://cascoly-images.com/pix/image-categories/

    I use this page to list the categories; I try to keep lowest categories to about 100 images

    it won’t matter for search, batch editor, etc since those don’t directly use categories

    http://cascoly.com/symbio/list.asp?list=42 shows how varied the use of categories is

    Mean # images / category = 41
    Median = 16.1

    and of course, there’s the basic question of whether buyers use categories much when searching; I use them mostly for my own organizing and editing

    Ok so how are you doing that – I think most of us who had sub categories saw them disappear when we upgraded to 2.9.*

    The category PAGE added to a menu shows all categories

    Adding image categories to dropdown menus no longer shows sub categories I think. This is why I have split some of my categories out in the header bar.

    I would echo Martha’s warning about disappearing categories, I have now reached my limit, if I add one more I will lose one, if I add two more all that will show in my header nav.
    bar is Home

    I doubt that many buyers will use categories and subcategories (unless the same buyer frequently returns to the same image site, thus gaining an intimate knowledge of that site structure).

    Using the extra codes for one’s own organizing would be much more useful. For example, I would like to retrieve a group of images for subsequent processing by Batch Editor, but couldn’t figure a way how to select a certain group, except filtering by keyword. Especially as the portfolios become larger, the ability to organize, filter, and process specific group of images would come very handy.

    The reason I’d like to have these categories is not directly related to buyers that come occasionally to our website.

    Besides the personal organization issue, I think it’s advantageous to have several categories like the ones exemplified under for the common visitor.

    Castles
    -> Almourol Castle
    -> São Jorge Castle
    -> Palmela Castle

    Having something like this allows for people searching for a specific thing in the Internet to access to a whole group of images of what they were looking for. And if most of the times these are people are just looking for images to watch or to steal, several times they post a link to a specific gallery from their blog or website to show the source of the image they’ve used and lead their friends to the whole image collection.

    I believe this is advantageous to us since you’ll have many more links directed to your portfolio, which improve your value to the Search Engines. And we never know who sees the link on the other people’s blog. It may be a buyer.

    More, you’ll have a url that could have the name of the gallery which help the indexing by the Search Engines. Well, at least if wordpress/symbiostock allows it. In my current less-than-half-finished zenfolio portfolio this is allowed and it does make a big difference in Google web results. Not so successful in the image results.

    Lusoimages,

    You can build hierarchy of galleries using any Worpress gallery plugin (there are hundreds of them) and on the lowest level just use one or number of keywords to show all needed symbiostock images.

    See example on my site – http://ansharimages.com/european-cities/ .
    I have only 1 level of indirection, but it is possible to have many levels using this approach.

    Congratulations for your great site and images.

    The galleries illustrated by a thumbnail are in the options of the free webdesign, was that something that you did yourself through programing or have you paid for another website configuration?

    That would be the look I’d like to my website except with more gallery levels.

    PS: hope you’ve enjoyed your stay in Portugal. 🙂

    I don’t have all that many so I just created my own page showing my sub categories – really didn’t take that long.
    I have no idea if customers will use it but I like it.

    in addition to my categories, I have ‘quick searches’ that use contact sheets
    http://cascoly-images.com/pix/animal-images-quick-search-contact-sheets/

    to make them:

    an extra advantage here is they can be posted on non-sym websites to create additional SEO backlinks
