The previous Symbiostock extracts metadata using a php library which had ceased development in 2004. As you can see it does a fairly good job! It still has a few hickups however, and its functionality is still somewhat limited when you consider the things we may wish to do with meta-data (either reading or writing).

So for the sake of complete functionality and extendability, we are aiming to use Exiftool: http://www.sno.phy.queensu.ca/~phil/exiftool/

As a developer’s program, exiftool might just be the best option out there.

At first I was going to make it available only to multi-site environments where the webmaster himself sets it up for the other sites (webmasters such as Cascoly and myself, and anyone else coming on).

With a little experimentation I find that it does work in a bluehost environment great (I tested it on Chromaco’s site). This means that we might be able to use exiftool for everyone!

To find out whether or not this is achievable, I’ve set up a small test plugin (attached). The more people test this feature, the better. It will allow us to simplify Symbiostock enough that nobody has to worry about what is under the hood, setting up options, etc.

TESTING INSTRUCTIONS

– Install the attached plugin as you would any other.
– Go to SETTINGS -> TEST EXIFTOOL

If successful, you should see a large list of values (metadata from the image) on an image of mine I had enclosed for testing.

If unsuccessful, you will not see much more than the title of the page.
