Hi all, its a sad reason to return here, but I have to disable my sales section on my symbiostock site as there is no way I can comply with the new EU VAT legislation unless someone can offer me a workaround. Who else with a symbiostock site keeps selling images to EU customers after 1 Jan, and how do you go comply with the new EU VAT rules?

    Thanks,
    Ron

Leo, maybe through integration of the payment system you can block customers from the 27 EU countries from purchasing an image and instead have a pop up appear with the warning? That way I/we can keep our site open for non EU customers.

I Ron, I’m happy to see you and I hope you are doing well.

Not too long ago I emailed you offering you the VAT tax prototype I created. It simply trades credentials between parties in the transaction, besides a few sales tracking mechanisms.

Also the future version of Symbio is going to utilize a pre-established cart which has vat tax covered several times over. That hopefully is not far away … its much prettier too.

Glad to see you again, and I hope you are doing well.

PS – since the need has increased, I’ll be sure to keep progress on this as fast as possible. If the current plugin I can send you is not sufficient, and this is a hugely important issue, its possible I can make a plugin that removes buy options from those particular countries – the last thing you want is to lose search rank by filtering countries.

Hi Leo, thanks for the kind words. I got your email, been very busy though. I replied yesterday as well.

I am not sure I understand all these tax things and issues. Fact is, I dont want to collect VAT, the process of reporting VAT is cumbersome and I am not going to comply. I just want to block the EU from purchasing my images to be honest. Hopefully a lot of people will do the same so that the EU might change their mind if enough customers start to complain.

Most my sales have been from the US anyways. So I am interested in your plugin if it offers the option to block EU customers.

Thanks again and its good to see you back, you sound as if you have found new energy and I hope you fare well going forward.

    Regards
    Ron

    Taxamo seems great actually.

I did a little research and with the new system I am creating, it turns out you will be able to use a wordpress taxamo extension.

If I can find some time to detour I’ll see about finding the most efficient way of filtering IP addresses (ie, locations) so that buy options are removed from the countries you specify.

Right now the biggest fix is the new version, so I’m putting as much as I can into that.

    Happy New Year everyone.

Hi Ron, I now see why you and others were so concerned about the VAT, there is a lot more information available now than when I last searched.

From what I understand you cannot block other EU countries from buying due to the “free trade” agreement although on both ebay and etsy where I am selling you can block/choose certain countries respectively so I am not sure how firmly this is policed – but that is for physical items maybe it is different for digital.

I too have taken the licensing part of my site offline as being self-employed I cannot afford tax problems, and I certainly don’t want the hassle of working out differing VAT levels for each EU member country, collecting the tax and then sending it to the various countries every quarter, life is complicated enough without getting involved in VAT.

This affects every single one of us throughout the world though, not just those in the EU – those outside would have to block sales to EU countries to get out of their legal obligation to collect VAT on sales to EU.

Hi Christine, nice to see you.

The new version of Symbiostock uses an established cart system – it simply subs out the work to it. That means every practical concern for the cart is already addressed. For instance, in this new system you can allow the user to purchase without login or not — VAT tax is covered.

As I continue to make progress I’ll release details. In the meantime work-arounds are probably best.

Donato Raponi, head of the EU VAT section is meeting with UK Vataction group within the next ten days so they can put forward the problems to him for micro sellers – that they currently term under £2,000,000 – I would LOVE to be a micro seller at that level.

Fingers crossed they persuade him to give a total exemption for a sensible amount so this rule/law/whatever will no longer affect us all
