I’ll take the suggestion to write a longer text description to heart (just wrote my first story), and will work slowly on expanding the existing one line descriptions. However, back to Cathy’s question:

Basically it says it ranks rich content and contextual content over simple keyword occurrences. Google’s always been moving in this direction, but this is the FIRST big change of this nature in 12 years.

To make it simple, google is more of a statistics machine than a matching machine. The web is becoming more social, so its seeing broader contexts instead of details.

    Edit:

I just realized thats not simple enough —

A picture and a sentence accompanied by 30 thumbnails on a page will have a weaker impact than say a picture with a paragraph and little else on the page.

So are you saying we should ditch the similar images on our image pages?

If I have three similar images, can I use the same story for all three images, or will Google penalize two of them?

people are over – reacting — first, it’s only been a couple of days, and google is still working out kinks

Let’s hope that it is only temporary kink in Google search – but the charts indicate a consistent decline over the last 2-3 WEEKS, not just a couple of days

The timeline of this issue seems to match the timeline of this (very significant) change mentioned below:
    http://www.seosiren.com/new-google-humm … algorithm/
If I’m not mistaken, isn’t the whole stock image business reporting a slowdown this last month?

Slowdown is one thing, but these charts show a drastic decline to almost zero.
Google must have changed the search in a way that does not benefit our network.

What is FAA? Federal Aviation Administration?

I didn’t think about that organization, but who knows, that name may help the other FAA.

My FAA is Fine Art America, and on Google Search they fly pretty high. I don’t know how they do it, but if you google for a specific image, their links come usually up before any stock agency’s links.

Many of my images are on both, Symbio site and FAA. I noticed that FAA gets very high ranking on search engines, so I added a link from my home FAA page to my Symbio site. Hopefully, that will steer some buyers to the Symbio collection.

My suggestion would be to mention specifically symbiostock.info as the Search Engine. It is a very fast and impressive search.

I suspect the main problem is with google search (or indexing).
When I try to search for some of my images by keyword, I see very few links to my symbiostock site. FAA, SS, DT, and other agencies are usually listed on the top.

as far as time spent – the theme’s only been active for a few months – we’re competing with agencies and free sites that have been around for years. you have about 600 images online, most in the most competitive areas– how many sales did you get from those before symbio? which is more LIKELY to help you — advertising your 600 images by yourself, or having others help by displaying them on searches? everyone IS benefiting from increased exposure. no one promised anyone would make anything on this project. but most of us continue to see this as superior to trying it alone. if you disagree, that’s your choice

That’s very true, the whole system has been up really only a few months and very few prospective buyers even know about it at this time. And others may have already prepaid their subscription plans, so they have to use up their existing credits first. It’s a slow ship to turn around.

The key is to increase the exposure for the network – primarily by adding images, links, new sites. Maybe by next fall, we’ll have a million of images, and the effort will start paying off. I hate to say it, but we’ll have to move our best images from other sites to our own site, even if they won’t get initially noticed. Just keep on shooting and uploading!

I think we need to be careful not to start looking like an agency. All that is needed for the agencies is to update their TOS that networked sites are considered an agency and we can all lose our micro stock accounts. Especially when we start to look like an agency. Thats why I am keeping myself a bit on the side lines. I dont want to end up losing my accounts.

Wouldn’t that only apply if you were exclusive somewhere? I’ve heard of people losing their exclusive account that way (not with Symbiostock though but another system).

Having your own site is fine. Being an agency might be more complicated. However, Blend Images is an agency and they are submitting to Shutterstock. Yuri was his own agency and submitting to Shutterstock. So maybe I am overreacting.

I don’t think that Symbiostock will make a noticeable dent in Shutterstock sales. However, it could impact and even annihilate the smaller agencies (especially if the individual Symbiosites removed their images from those marginal agencies). And that, in turn, may benefit Shutterstock and the other major agencies.

Les Palenik, based in Richmond Hill, Ontario.

My portfolio is varied (once all images are uploaded), with emphasis on Ontario landscape, whitewater sport, housing and cottage scenes, and selected images from my travels.

I am very excited about the birth and growth of the Symbiostock world and have high hopes for finding new markets for my images and am proud being part of this wonderful and inspiring community.
